Obituary of Edith Madeline Cox
Please share a memory of Edith to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Edith Madeline Cox, 89, of Taplin, peacefully entered the presence of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Wednesday, December 21, 2022, at her residence, surrounded by her loved ones. She was born on January 29, 1933, to the late Jesse Grimmette and the late Estelle (Belcher) Grimmette- Stephens in Pal Mal Hollow in Mallory.
Edith met the love of her life, Lacy Cox, at the age of 14, knowing in her heart the moment she saw him that he was the man she was going to marry. Together they made their home in Taplin, where they raised their 4 children: Margaret, Lacy Jr., Cathy, and Pamela.
Edith was a proud employee of Logan General Hospital, where she worked in Obstetrics and Pediatrics as a nursing aide and unit secretary. She took great pride in caring for her patients for over 31 years.
Edith took an interest in many things during her life, including growing a beautiful garden of flowers and tomatoes, crocheting, quilting, and cooking. She took great pride in keeping the cleanest house. In their retirement, she and Lacy enjoyed spending time at the family camp at Indian Meadows in Lerona, with her friends, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
What she was most passionate about, though, was her love of Jesus. She and Lacy spent over 44 years in ministry together, spreading the gospel throughout Logan County and pastoring churches at Lyburn Freewill Baptist Church, Wilbur Freewill Baptist Church, Bright Star Freewill Baptist Church, New Hope Freewill Baptist Church, Elk Creek Freewill Baptist Church, and Mt. Olive Freewill Baptist Church. Her calling was to sing to the Lord, and she helped lead and sing in the choir at every church they pastored, as well as singing often in her home church at Taplin Free Will Baptist. And when she wasn't singing about Jesus, she was talking about and praising Jesus and sharing how good He had been to her and her family to whoever would listen. And her heart desired to see all her family and friends saved so they would make it to heaven with her.
In addition to her parents, Edith was preceded in death by her loving husband of 53 years, Lacy; her brothers, Herbert (Peanut) Grimmette, Michael Stephens, David Stephens, and Tracy Grimmette; her sister-in-law, Alta Jane Grimmette; her daughter Cathy Cox-Dean; and her granddaughter, Laci Reneé Spence.
Those left to cherish the countless wonderful memories of her include her brothers, James Grimmette of Bruno; Donald (Sandy) Grimmette of Raeburn, NC; Larry (Carolyn) Grimmette of Gallipolis, OH; Brenda (Charlie) Williamson of Bruno and Ronnie "Dickie" (Charlene) Stephens of Davin; children Margaret (Sheldon) Wells of Taplin; Lacy (Katy) Cox, Jr. of Wilkinson; Pamela (Willard) Spence of Taplin; her Grandchildren Meredith Renee Wells (Ken McCoy) of Neibert; Joshua (Kristy) Cox of Cedar Grove; Rebecca (James) Short of South Man; Sara Chapman of Naugatuck; Seth (Amanda) Cox of Madison; Anthony “Tony” (Melissa) Dean of Chapmanville; Willard Justin (Tracy) Spence of Cyclone; Shelley (Tommy) Belcher of Man, Katrina Cox and her companion Shawn Anderson of Crown; 19 great-grandchildren, 9 great-great-grandchildren; and a former grandson-in-law whom she loved, Jay Chapman of Lenore, along with a host of family, friends, and her brothers and sisters in Christ whom she will one day reunite with again.
Though her body was tired and worn from her labors here on earth, in her last days Edith often did what she had done for so long, spending time with her loved ones and singing to the Lord, praising and blessing His name.
She will always be Mom, Nanny, or Nanny Cox to those who cherish her memory and the legacy she left for us here on earth.
We love and miss you, but we’ll see you one day after a while...
