I have been a teacher longer than Alan’s thirty-one years on earth. And having worked with so many good students, I look back and see that none of them was like Alan. He had an intuitive understanding that language is precious because it’s what we use to understand the world, including ourselves; and he had an intuitive understanding that literature (whether a novel by Cormac McCarthy or a lyric by Jack White) should be cherished because it is a record of people working hard with language to make sense of the often difficult experience of our lives. Alan worked hard. He will be a model to me in my remaining years.
My deepest sympathy to Lynn and other members of Alan's family.

I knew Alan since he was 13 years old. One of the smartest and most precocious thirteen year olds that I've ever met. He was a good person, and a good friend through the past eighteen years. He will be greatly missed by many.

One of my favorites in all the world. Bright. Funny. Witty. Too smart for his own good, really.
A complete joy to spend time with no matter what you were doing. A wonderful conversationalist who forced you to think. He loved all things I love, and we bonded over those things (music, movies, video games). He got me. He knew me probably better than I do.
I will miss him every single day.

I didn't have the pleasure of knowing this young man, but I did know his mother, and some of his other family members. Alice & I graduated together and were friends throughout school.
I have a son close to this age as well and it breaks my heart hearing of this.
