Dear Smoot Family,
For some reason, tonight I felt compelled to read the online news from my old hometown of Accoville, WV and was shocked and saddened to read that Richard had died. I lived with my grandmother, Hilda Duncan, and my brother Billy, next door to the Smoot family in the early 1960's and I remember them so fondly! Roger, Richard and the other boys and I played together - marbles, basketball, wading in the creek (it was forbidden) and running through the mountains, also forbidden.
Richard, Roger and the Smoot family always treated me like one of their own, and there was always a place for me in their home and at their table. Lulie Smoot was one of the finest women I have ever known. I was afraid of Ralph. :) It makes me sad to see so many from this family gone, but I know they are all with the Lord. I smiled as I read Richard's obituary and saw the posted pictures, knowing he lived a good life, was surrounded by family and gave and received so much love.
My prayers are with your family as you grieve this good man. Thank you for the memories.

First of all, I love this picture of Richard--it's so good. I just wanted to express my love for him and the sadness I feel for knowing that I will never see him again. Whenever we bumped into each other, he always made me feel that he was sincerely happy to see me, and the feeling was mutual. He'd say, "How you doin', babe?" He had a great sense of humor and a comforting and calm demeanor. We had some good times growing up and he loved coming down to our house to hang out when we were teens. Those were precious days never to be forgotten. He was an awesome husband and father who loved his wife, children, grandchildren and family. Go rest now, my dear cousin and enjoy seeing your loved ones who went on before you.

My dad, Mack Goodman, was Richard’s first cousin, and they were great friends all through out life. My dad has passed away, so I plan to attend Richards services to stand in for my dad because I know without a doubt, my dad would want me to. Richard was a great man. Many prayers for his family.
Blessings,
Ashley (Goodman) Matney
