James Carter Of Lindside, WV James Carter, 98, of Lindside formerly of Bruno, departed this life on Friday, December 21, 2012, at Greenbrier Valley Hospital at Lewisburg, after a short illness. He was born November 4, 1914, at Advance, NC, the son of the late John Elser and Sallie Kate Smith Carter. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Cleo Mosley Carter; one son, Billy Ray Carter; one daughter-in-law, Opal Mae Walls Carter; one granddaughter, Deborah "Debbie" Carter Brown and her husband, Linzie Ray Brown, Jr.; one great-grandson, Jamey Brown; one great-granddaughter-in-law, Nikki Brown; five brothers, Frank, Clarence, Ray, Craig, and Grady Carter; and three sisters, Myrtle Carter Riggs, Mary Eliz Carter, and Lelia Carter. Jimmy came to Logan County in 1935 to work in the coal fields where he met his wife, Cleo. They were married on June 15, 1937. He retired in 1972 from Island Creek Coal Company. Jimmy moved to Monroe County in 1975 where he spent his retirement working on the farm, hunting, and feeding his deer. Those left to cherish his memory are two sons, James E. Carter and Gerald (Brenda) Carter, both of Bruno; one daughter, Betty (Bob) Surface of Lindside; one sister, Alma Wafford of Winston-Salem, NC; four grandsons, Shannon (Teresa) Hall of Salem, VA, Rusty (Gwen) Surface of Elkins, Pat (Jennifer) White of Stowe, and Jamey (Kim) White of Landville; two granddaughters, Robin Carter (Brian) Harvey of Bruno and Leslie White (Kerwin) Morgan of Hagerstown, MD; six great-grandsons, Billy Brown, Zac Harvey, and Brody Harvey, all of Bruno, Derrick Hall of Salem, VA, and Luke and Logan Surface, both of Elkins; four great-granddaughters, Adrianna Hall of Salem, VA, KayLee White of Landville, and Cheyanne Morgan and Taylor Morgan, both of Hagerstown, MD; and a host of nieces and nephews along with a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, December 23, 2012, at the Krantz-McNeely Funeral Home Chapel at Man with Rev. Harrison Williamson and Larry Toler officiating. Burial will follow at Highland Memory Gardens at Godby. Visitation will be held one hour prior to services at the funeral home also. Pall bearers will be family and friends.
