Kenneth E. Compton
Of Amherstdale, WV
Kenneth E. Compton, 78, of Amherstdale, left his earthly home, surrounded by his loving family, after a short illness, on Wednesday, February 8, 2012, to enter his heavenly home.
He was born February 22, 1933, at Lorado, the son of the late Clyde Compton and Goldie Ramsey Compton Daniels.
In addition to his parents, Kenneth was preceded in death by the true love of his life, Annie Gorta Compton with whom he shared 51 years of marriage; and one brother, Troy Compton.
Kenneth enjoyed swinging outside on his porch swing, family time, "telling stories", and singing the old gospel hymns. He was a member of the Becco United Baptist Church at Becco. After his father became too ill to work, Kenneth quit school at the age of 13 and went to work in the coal mines for four years to help his parents support the family. At the age of 19 he was covered up in a roof fall at the mines and spent the next two years recovering. He was then drafted into the U.S. Army and stationed at Fort Knox, KY for two years where he was honorably discharged after fulfilling his term of duty. He then returned to Logan County where he was employed with the Logan County Board of Education as a bus driver and then a mechanic, retiring in 1988 after 32 years of service. He sang gospel music for many years as part of the singing groups the Logan Heirs and the Crusaders.
He was the devoted and loving father of two sons, Clyde and his wife, Crystal who was a daughter in his eyes, with whom he made his home and his "Bearcat", Teddy Compton, all of Amherstdale. Kenneth was a wonderful grandfather to his grandsons which he thought of as his very own, Michael Compton and his wife, Amy, of Amherstdale and Kenneth Compton of Greenup, KY; and his little blonde sweetheart, his granddaughter, Victoria Compton of Amherstdale. The great-grandfather of his pride and joy, Austin Compton of Amherstdale, whom he saw everyday and was the boy who lit up his life, Chase Compton of Greenup, Ky, and Alivia and Abigail Mitchem, both of Danville. The devoted brother of Dennis Compton and his wife, Jennie, of Latrobe, Lois Browning of Columbus, OH, Barbara Burton and her husband, Earl of Bolt, Roger Compton and his wife, Clea, of Middletown, OH, and Johnny Daniels and his wife, Sandra, of Frankfort, KY. Also left to miss him are a very dear and special friend, Denise Osborne and his canine companion and best friend, Brownie.
The family would like to extend their sincere appreciation to Man ARH Home Health Nurses, Nancy and Sherry. Our deepest thanks are extended to the team who helped care for him from Dignity Hospice, Shana, Charlotte, Teresa, Carolyn, and Sherry, for all of their devotion, compassion, care, and comfort during this time; and a special thanks to Dr. Stollings.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, February 12, 2012, at the Becco United Baptist Church at Becco with Rev. Denver McClellan officiating. Burial will follow in Highland Memory Gardens at Godby where military graveside rites will be conducted by VFW Post 6153 and American Legion Post 103 of Chapmanville and the DAV Post 39 of Harts.
Visitation will be held from 6-9 p.m. Saturday at the church and one hour prior to services at the church also.
Pall bearers will be his nephews, Dennis Compton, Jr., Tony Compton, Trey Compton, Austin Compton, and Travis Compton; and his friend, Ricky Dale Browning.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of the Krantz-McNeely Funeral Home at Man.
