John R. Maynard, Jr.
Of Lyburn, WV
John R. Maynard, Jr., 87, of Lyburn, went to be with the Lord on January 31, 2012, from Charleston Memorial Hospital, after an extended illness.
He was born June 15, 1924, at Madison Creek, the son of the late John R., Sr. and Lena O'Daniels Maynard.
In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by two daughters, Alberta Maynard Wells and her husband, Johnny Wells, and Carol Sue Maynard; one step-son that he considered a son, Buell Ellis and his wife, Lena Ellis; one grandson, Michael Donavan Maynard; one granddaughter, Sheila Wells; one great-granddaughter, Cassandra Sammons; one sister, Gladys Maynard Harless; and five brothers, Bernard, Cletis, Berthel, Clarence, and Willard "Bill" Maynard.
John was a retired coal miner formerly employed with Chafin Coal Company. He was a member of the UMWA District 17. The oldest member of Lyburn Free Will Baptist Church, John helped build the church and had served in various positions in the church during his 33 years of membership. When he was able, he enjoyed camping, hunting, and fishing with his family. John loved people and was always willing to lend a helping hand. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Tootsie Maynard with whom he shared his life for 48 years; two sons, Larry (Delsie) Maynard of Earling and Lonnie (Lisa) Maynard of McConnell; two step-children that he loved like his own, Delie Ellis Maynard of Lyburn and Danny (Linda) Adkins of IL; one sister, Ludema Spaulding of Madison Creek; one brother, Lester Maynard of Rita; one brother-in-law, Roosevelt Adkins of IN; 11 grandchildren, Lonnie (Lyla) Maynard II, Angela (Freddy) Adkins, Vickie (Randy) Booth, Violet (William) Sammons, Regina (Leo) Perry, Jr., Larry (Krissy) Maynard II, Janie (Jeff) Amburgey, Eugenia (Stacy) DeBerry, Melissa (Jody) Brown, Lanny R. (Sabrina) Maynard, Deloris (Cletis) Caldwell; and seven step-grandchildren he thought of as his own, Elliott (Ann) Ellis, Michelle (Hank) Lester, Jakob Winn, Laura Adkins, Candy Adkins, Diana Adkins, and Jamie Nelson; 32 great-grandchildren; 10 great-great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, February 3, 2012, at the Lyburn Free Will Baptist Church at Lyburn with Rev. Linzel Walls and Rev. John T. Vance officiating. Burial will follow in Highland Memory Gardens at Godby.
Visitation will be held from 6-9 p.m. Thursday at the church and one hour prior to services also.
Pall bearers will be Lonnie Maynard II, Lanny Russell Maynard, Jody Brown, Michael Brown, friends, and church members.
