Of Cyclone, WV
Guy Frederick “J.D.” Deer, 69, of Cyclone, went away with a friend Saturday, March 19, 2011, from Logan Regional Medical Center at Logan after a long illness.
He was born October 4, 1941, at Kistler, a son of the late William Edward and Eva Frye Deer.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Bill Deer and Clyde Neil; one sister, Patsy Lou Ellis; two sisters-in-law, Eleanor Deer and Garnett Deer; and three special brothers-in-law, John Earl Ellis, Mike Marcum, and Hank Hendrickson.
Freddy attended school in Boone County and at Man High School. Leaving school to join the U.S. Marine Corp, Freddy proudly served his country for 13 ½ years during the Cuban Missile Crisis and the Viet Nam War, ultimately being stationed in Italy. During his enlistment he attained the rank of Staff Sergeant and was certified as both a Rifle Sharpshooter and a Pistol Sharpshooter. He also and attended the Camouflage School, the Demolition School, and the Land Mine Warfare School. In 1969 Freddy graduated from the Universal Construction School, Inc. at Miami, FL. He was a certified heavy equipment operator formerly employed with Amherst Coal Company finally retiring in April of 1998 from Arch Coal of WV. Freddy was a member of the Campus Church of God and the Disabled American Veterans at Oceana. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and tinkering on automobiles. During his younger years, Freddy liked to play sports but as he aged he satisfied this urge by watching sports on television.
Those left to share the memories of his life are his wife of 35 years, Maxine Brickles Deer of Cyclone; two sons, Frederick Carl Deer and Guy Richard (Travanna “T.J.”) Deer, both of Logan; two sisters, Murel Hendrickson of Wildersville, TN and Sharon K. (Jim) Trivett of Merritt Island, FL; a special brother-in-law, Mason (Gladys Elaine) Grimmett of Mallory; several nieces and nephews; special friends, Rev. Roger Stewart and Jim Frazier; and his church family along with a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will commence at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 23, 2011, at the Campus Church of God at Campus with Rev. Roger Stewart assisted by Rev. Jim Frazier officiating. Committal services will be observed at the church after the funeral with military honors conducted by the Wyoming County Honor Guard. Burial will follow in Isaacs Sloan Cemetery at West Hamlin.
Visitation will be held from 6-9 p.m. Tuesday at the church and one hour prior to services.
Pall bearers will be family and friends.
