Obituary of Barbara Jean Cook White

Barbara Jean Cook White Of Man, WV Barbara Jean Cook White, 77, of Man, went to be with her Heavenly Father and her husband, John Sr., on Thursday, February 10, 2011, in Pearisburg, VA, after a long illness. She was born November 11, 1933, at Lundale, the daughter of the late Eual and Catherine Marrs Cook. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, “Big John” White; sister, Henrietta Owens; and brothers, Kenny Cook and Howard Dale Cook. Barbara lived a very active life and was involved in many organizations. The young Republicans Club, the Triadelphia Women’s Club, the Hemlock Hills Garden Club, the United Methodist Women, and was a longtime member of the Bruce McDonald Memorial United Methodist Church. In her early years, she was employed as a teacher, co-owner of the Gift Barn and a server at the Man Theater Grill. She then devoted the remainder of her life to being a wife, mother, and “NaNa”, Barbara’s greatest joy was in giving. Her generosity blessed many people. Rarely could you visit her home without her insisting that you take something home with you. Her greatest love was her great-grandchildren with whom she made many wonderful memories. They will always remember their “NaNa”. Barbara found her greatest solitude in spending time with family at her son John’s farm, Mountain Meadow, in Monroe County. This is where she found the most peace at the end of her time on earth. Those left to continue loving Barbara are her son, John (Shellie) White II of Greenville in Monroe County; daughter, Elizabeth Ann (Steve) Songer of Huntington; sisters, Betty Vernatter of Robinette, Phyllis (Ron) Brown of Clarksville, TN, Nancy (Sam) Spence of Zionsville, IN, Judy (Clyde) Stroupes of Ringold, GA, and Kathy (George) Haygood of Chattanooga, TN; brother, Harold Dean (Chris) Cook of Harts; her grandchildren, John (Melissa) White III of Davin, Brandon (Cortney) White plus one of Greenville in Monroe County; Kelli (Michael) Veres of Davin; Richard Lowe of Huntington, Courtney Lowe of Seattle, WA, and Allison Lowe of Greenville in Monroe County; and great-grandchildren, Michael Drake Veres, Maggie Elizabeth White, and John Connor White IV, all of Davin. The family thanks Nancy Black, Patty Duncan, Sherry Duncan, Tammy Morgan, and Julia Southers for the loving care they gave Barbara during her illness. She loved them dearly. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the First Baptist Church, Attn: Baptist Help Center/ Food Pantry, 109 E. McDonald Ave., Man, WV 25635 Services will be conducted 12 Noon Monday, February 14, 2011, at the Krantz-McNeely Funeral Home at Man with Rev. Richard Brown officiating. Burial will follow in Highland Memory Gardens at Godby. Friends may call one hour prior to services at the funeral home. Pall bearers will be Joel OBrien, Adam Black, Gilman Burgess, Ty Cook, Millard Tomblin, and Ronnie Brown II. Honorary pall bearers will be Tommy Jeffrey, Dr. Joshua O’Brien, Rupie Phillips, and Mike Grimmett.
