Obituary of Raymond Harl Elliott

Raymond Harl Elliott Of Earling, WV Raymond Harl Elliott, 94, of Earling, joined his beloved wife, Phyllis, in the arms of Christ on Wednesday, March 10, 2010, from Logan Regional Medical Center at Logan after a short illness. He was born February 6, 1916, in Clifton, North Carolina, a son of the late William “Willie” Elliott and Ella Miller Elliott Hodge. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis Louise Hanshaw Elliott; step-father, R. L. Hodge; one son, Edwin Dyche “Corkey” Elliott; one brother, Paul Elliott; two sisters, Ola Day and Hazel Blankenship; two sisters-in-law; Iris Hodge and Helen Elliott; three brothers-in-law, Hardwick Cepelnik, Walter Day and Dennis Blankenship; and a dear friend, Douglas “Mickey” Ely. Raymond joined the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1934, where he drove a truck during the construction of the Blue Ridge Parkway in North Carolina. He came to Logan County in 1935 and began working at the Junior Mercantile Store at Earling where he met his wife of 69 years. Throughout his career, Raymond worked for WV Coal and Coke at the Earling Tipple, Powellton Coal Company at the Man Tipple, Man Appalachian Regional Hospital in Central Supply, retiring at the age of 70 from Guyan Machinery as a truck driver. Raymond served the Triadelphia area as a coach for the Elkay Mining Little League team for 22 years. Until its closure, Raymond was a member and served as superintendent at the Earling Methodist Church. He was a current member of the McConnell Tabernacle. When he was able, Raymond loved to hunt, fish, and pick blackberries. He was a master of making blackberry jelly and jam. Those left to cherish his memory are two daughters, Frances (Tracey) Browning of Cow Creek and Carol (Scott) McGraw of Mill Creek; two sons, Robert (Phyllis) Elliott of Combs Addition and Jonas (Lydia) Elliott of Crooked Creek; one brother, Doyle Hodge; two sisters, Atteleen (Leonard) Scott and Mildred Cepelnik; eight grandchildren, Rebecca (Jamie) Harrison, Elizabeth Durham and her fiancé, John Bodkin, M.D., James Paul (Sandra) McGraw, Mary Frances (Cecil Van) Collins, Matthew (Crystal) Elliott, Kristina Elliott, Amanda Elliott, and Hannah Elliott; nine great-grandchildren, Aaron Adkins, Anna and Will Durham, Corey, Tanner, and Hayla McGraw, Ryan and Nicholas Elliott, and his newest great-granddaughter, Ashira; very special friends, Patty Caldwell Ely and Julius Sabo; many nieces and nephews, along with a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 14, 2010, at the Krantz-McNeely Funeral Home Chapel with his son, Rev. Jonas Elliott officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery at Pecks Mill. Visitation will be held from 6-9 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home and one hour prior to services. Pall bearers will be Matthew Elliott, Jamie Harrison, Rodney Dingess, Van Collins, James Paul McGraw, and Melvin Bledsoe.
