Obituary of Treaby Jean Scaggs

Rev. Treaby Scaggs, Sr. Of Neibert, WV Rev. Treaby Jean Scaggs, Sr., 76, of Neibert, with a shout completed his journey home on Thursday, January 26, 2017, leaving from Logan Regional Medical Center, after a long illness. He was born June 9, 1940, at Earling, a son of the late Willard and Edith Virgie Adkins Scaggs. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by one sister, Ann Hager. Treaby joined the U.S. Marine Corp where he served during the Cuban Missile Crisis. He married the love of his life, Myrtle, on December 21, 1959. After being honorably discharged from the Marines, he and Myrtle returned to Logan County. He became a certified electrician and worked in the coal industry for nearly 30 years retiring in 1994. Treaby was a member of the UMWA. Treaby was converted on Tuesday night, November 15, 1955, at Taplin Church. He was Baptized at 6:00 p.m. Friday the 25th of November 1955 at Rita. The call for the office of a Deacon was given by Elder Bobby Gene Smith to Treaby on July 14, 1973 and he was ordained that day at the Bethlehem Freewill Baptist Church. The charge was given by Elder James Frazier on July 10, 1982 and Treaby was ordained for Minister on that very day, the 2nd Saturday of July. He began his ministry at Peach Creek Freewill Baptist Church and was also the pastor at Lyburn Freewill Baptist Church for a short time. Returning home to Taplin Freewill Baptist Church in November of 1997, Treaby remained their beloved Pastor for 17 years. Those left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 57 years, Myrtle Merritt Scaggs; one son, Rev. Treaby (Tammy) Scaggs, Jr. of Chapmanville; one daughter, Jennifer Scaggs of Neibert; one grandson, Travis Scaggs of Chapmanville; three nephews who Treaby helped raise, David Richie (Easter) Hager of Earling, Jody Hager of Ethel, and Scotty Hager of Chapmanville; a special nephew that assisted in Treaby's care, Jordan Bourne of Neibert; and many other nieces and nephews along with a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held at 12:00 p.m. Monday, January 30, 2017, at the Taplin Freewill Baptist Church at Taplin with Rev. Roger Sizemore and Rev. Treaby Scaggs, Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery at Pecks Mill with Rev. Lacy Cox, Jr. conducting the graveside service and where military graveside rites will be conducted by VFW Post 6153 and American Legion Post 103 of Chapmanville and the DAV Post 39 of Harts. Visitation will be held from 6-9 p.m. Sunday at the Krantz-McNeely Funeral Home at Man and one hour prior to services at the church. Pall bearers will be Justin and Jordan Bourne, Travis Scaggs, and the men of Taplin Freewill Baptist Church. Honorary pall bearers will be Richie, Jody, and Scotty Hager.
