W. Carmel Hughes, Jr.
of Davin, WV
W. Carmel Hughes, Jr., 72, of Davin, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, Wednesday, May 4, 2016 at Logan Regional Medical Center, following a courageous battle with brain cancer.
He was born June 7, 1943, at Fola, the son of Willow Carmel Hughes, Sr. and the late Bernice Lorene Legg Hughes.
In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by one son, W.C.H., III; father and mother-in-law, Isaac and Frankie Hunt; brother, James "Eddie" Hughes; maternal grandparents, Curtis and Hattie Legg; and paternal grandparents, Rufus and Edna Hughes.
Carmel was a 1961 graduate of Man High School and during that time he was a member of the football team, golden glove boxing champ, participated in school plays, and later was inducted into the Man High School Hall of Fame in 2011. After graduation, he served in the US Airforce during 1961-1968 and trained as a medical corpsman and medical laboratory technician. He worked in the mining and construction fields and retired in 2006. Carmel was the strength and conditioning coach at Man High School where he volunteered his time for over 20 years, and touched the lives of many area youths. He coached the "Hillbillie Ironworkers Powerlifting Team" where many members won numerous state, national, and world championship titles.
Those left to cherish his memory, in addition to his father, are his wife of 48 years Ann Donna Hunt Hughes; two sons, Mark Kevin (Jessica) Hughes of Accoville and Michael David Hughes of Georgia; one daughter, Sherry Ann (Gary) Depta of Kistler; two sisters, Carol (John Kabus) Pierce of Cape Coral, FL and Patricia (Kenny) Solomon of New Boston, MI; three brothers, Curtis (Karen) Hughes of Grove City, OH, Lowell (Judy) Hughes of Accoville, and Michael (Margo) Hughes of Globe, AZ; five grandsons, Marcus Carmel (Jessica Goodman) Hughes of Lundale, Tiberius Karmel "TK" Hughes of Accoville, Alex Depta of TX, Scott (Shannon) Hughes of San Diego, CA, and Terry Hughes of WA; two granddaughters, Danielle (Jonathan) Jessie of Monaville and Andrea Depta of Kistler; two great granddaughters, Jazmyn and Jozlyn Jessie both of Monaville; along with a host of other relatives and friends.
A celebration of life gathering will be held from 2-6 p.m. Sunday, May 15, 2016, at the Man High School Little Theatre at Man.
To honor Carmel's wishes he will be cremated.
