Aubrey "Hobie" Messer
of Accoville, WV
Aubrey "Hobie" Messer, 92, of Accoville, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, March 12, 2016, leaving from Logan Regional Medical Center after a long illness.
He was born on June 11, 1923, at Accoville, a son of the late Calvin and Drusie Hensley Messer.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Viola Davis Messer; one daughter, Carole Sue Workman; four sisters, Arlene Combs, Fannie Drake, Elizabeth Messer, and Mildred Messer; four brothers, Noah, Roy, Donald, and Allen Messer; and one grandson, John Phillip "J.P." Messer.
Hobie was a coal miner with 41 and a half years of service who retired from Island Creek Coal Company. A Marine Corp Veteran of WWII, he served in the 3rd Marine Regiment where he received four Battle Stars. Hobie was a member of the Accoville United Methodist Church for over 60 years, the UMWA local 5850, a life member of the VFW Post 8412, American Legion Post 19, a life member of the 3rd Marine Division, and a life member of the Marine Corp League of Logan. He was a former Triadelphia Little League Manager for 17 years and was a former Boy Scout Master for Troop 66 and Troop 51.
Those left to cherish his memory are two sons, Robert Wesley (Linda) Messer, Sr. of Accoville and Aubrey "Peanut" (Debra) Messer, Jr. of Tigrett, TN; 11 grandchildren, Robert W. Messer, Jr., Kevin Shane Messer, Todd Erik (Stephanie) Messer, Christopher Shawn (Jill) Messer, Nicholas Neal Messer, Chastity Ann (Jimmy) Turnbow, Kristi Renee Workman, Brian David (Chris) Workman, Scott Allen (Nicole) Workman, Jon Austin Workman, and Brett Workman; 19 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren along with a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, March 16, 2016, at Accoville United Methodist Church with Rev. Norman Harvey officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery where military graveside rites will be conducted by VFW Post 6153 and American Legion Post 103 of Chapmanville and DAV Post 39 of Harts.
Visitation will be held from 6-9 p.m. Tuesday at the Accoville United Methodist Church and one hour prior to services at the church also.
Pall bearers will be grandsons.
