Hibbert L. "Popeye" Lester, 79, of Davin, went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Monday, November 4, 2024, at the Hubbard House at Charleston after a long illness.
He was born August 26, 1945, in Logan County, the son of the late Tilden James and Oma (Grimmett) Lester.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Kenneth "Bub" Lester; six sisters, Bonnie R. Harper, Ernestine Browning, Martha Callentine, Betty Hall, June Brumfield, and one infant sister; five brothers, James "Hot Rod" Lester, Okey A. Lester, Kermit Lester, and two infant brothers; one half-sister, Inez Lester; and three half-brothers, Robert Lester, Mayo Lester, and Clay Lester; his parents-in-law, Leonard and Vicie Ellis; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Anna Jean Porter, Leonard "Buddy" Ellis, Jr. and Patricia "Patty" Ellis, Thurman Ellis, Jackie Pete Adkins, and Robert "Bob" Sutton.
Popeye was saved in 1991 and joined the Davin Baptist Church as a faithful member, former Deacon, and former Trustee. He loved his Lord and his church and often cooked for church dinners and fixed anything in the church that needed a carpenter's touch.
Popeye was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was a retired diesel mechanic in the coal industry. Popeye was also a contractor who built homes and the owner and operator of the K & B Muffler Shop on Huff Creek. He enjoyed woodworking, gardening, fishing, and hunting.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of 56 years, Pauline (Ellis) Lester; his daughter, Balinda Summers of Davin; two granddaughters, Haleigh Lester and Kenley Lester and one grandson, Samuel Owen Summers; all of Davin; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Mary Adkins, Linda Ellis Bailey, Yvonne Sutton, Rev. Paul, and Judy Ellis, and Rev. Johnny and Naomi Hatfield; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins along with a host of other relatives, church family, and friends.
The family would like to express sincere appreciation to Chris Tipton, LEASA Ambulance Service, the Huntington Veterans Administration Medical Center, and the Hubbard House in Charleston, for the compassion and care they provided through the years.
