Please share a memory of Donald to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Donald “Bucky” Maynard, 66, of Accoville, went to his Heavenly home on Thursday, March 14, 2024, leaving from CAMC-Memorial Division after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born on October 22, 1957, at Logan, the son of the late Roy and Christine (Vanover) Maynard. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Archie and Etta (McComas) Vanover; paternal grandparents, Wayne and Victoria (Adkins) Maynard; two sisters, Rose Ella Fugate and JoAnn Curry; 15 half siblings; a very special nephew, Kody Faine; and a special father-in-law, Paul Brooks. He attended Man High School. Bucky worked for Napier’s Service Center as a mechanic until the mid-1980s. He then decided to change occupations and became a heavy equipment operator, working for various surface mines until his retirement in 2013. Bucky was a gifted mechanic who could fix most anything. He had a charismatic personality that enabled him to find common ground with anyone to have good conversations. Bucky never met a stranger and was always willing to lend a helping hand. He had a deep love for the Lord and attended the Mt. Olive Freewill Baptist Church where he really enjoyed the good singing. Devoted to his family, Bucky was a loving husband, father, Popaw, brother, uncle, and friend. He will be deeply missed by all who loved him. Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of almost 40 years, Debra Lynn (Brooks) Maynard; one daughter, Holly Shankool and her husband Anthony of Charleston; a bonus son, Joe Smoot of Lundale; two grandchildren, Sadie Shankool and Maddox Shankool, both of Charleston; three sisters, Imogene Sue Grimmett of Tazewell, TN, Charlene (Harrison) Spaulding, and Nina (Billy) Marcum of Chapmanville; many nieces and nephews; and his yorkie, Ginger who was his fur baby; along with a host of other relatives and friends. Visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. Monday, March 18, 2024, at the Mt. Olive Freewill Baptist Church at Accoville. Funeral services will begin at 1:00 p.m. Monday at the Mt. Olive Freewill Baptist Church with Rev. Alan Bailey and Rev. Tim Willis officiating. Burial will follow in Maynard-Spaulding Family Cemetery at Madison Creek. Pallbearers will be his son-in-law, Anthony Shankool and his nephews. Honorary pallbearers will be David Brooks, Billy Marcum, Harrison Spaulding, Sam Williams, Leroy Terry, Curtis Hunter, and Bill Owens.
