Obituary of William C. Carter

William Cecil “Tootie” Carter, Sr., passed away in Logan Regional Medical Center on Thursday, January 25, 2024. Tootie was born in Lundale, WV to Cecil Carter and Ophelia Jones Carter on October 22, 1941. He graduated from high school at Man High School. He earned a Bachelor's Degree in Social Studies from New Mexico Highlands University and a Master's Degree in school administration from Marshall University. He worked as a teacher, substitute teacher, coach of many sports, and administrator for the Logan Board of Education for over 50 years. He enjoyed running, tennis, working with kids, and especially his family, in particular his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Coach Carter was 1st team 3A all-state football player while at Man High School and holds the NAIA record for the longest touchdown reception of 99 yards at New Mexico Highlands University. Coach Carter began his coaching career in 1966 at Man Junior High School, where he coached multiple sports. He later transitioned to Man High School in 1969. Where he became the head football coach until 1998. In that time span, he amassed over 200 victories, qualified for the playoffs 12 times, and finished as state runners-up 3 times. He was also the head baseball coach for 12 years, during which time he had 9 winning seasons. After his retirement in 2004, he resumed coaching both football and baseball at Man Middle School in 2005, which lasted for the next 17 years. Awards and Recognitions • Inducted to the West Virginia All Black Schools Sports and Academic Hall of Fame • Inducted to the Man High School Hall of Fame • Coached the 1983 South Team for the North/South Game • First WV black high school coach • Renamed the high school baseball field to the William “Tootie” Carter Athletic Field. Tootie is survived by his wife, Beverly Ann (Thompson) Carter; his two children Kimberly Hairston (John) of LaPlata, Maryland, William “Tootie” Carter, Jr. (Lewie) of Huntington, WV; his two grandchildren Jeremy Hairston (Leah), Jasmine D. Hairston (Ris); three great-grandchildren Charlotte, Ella & Jackson Hairston, and a host of nieces and nephews. Those left to cherish his memory: brothers Horlin Carter, Sr. (Boonie), Reginald B. Carter (Bub), and Thurmond Carter (Dit). Deceased: Dorothy Howze (sister), Orlin Carter (brother), Viola Green (sister), Blanche Pippens (sister), Shirley Rankin (sister), Wanda Helton (sister), Adele Carter (sister). Special life-long friend Eddie Merritt. Visitation will be held from 6 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 30th, 2024, at the Word of Life Church in Logan. A Celebration of Life Service will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, at the Word of Life Church with Rev. Gary Wilson, Rev. Michael Pollard, and Rev. Joshua Vanhook officiating. He will be lovingly laid to rest in Highland Memory Gardens at Godby. Pallbearers will be: Jeremy Hairston, Johanson Sharp, Leroy Sharp, Orlando Washington, Horlin “Boonie” Carter, Jr., and Tim McCoy. Honorary Pallbearers: Bill Clark, Lionel Taylor, Donald Cowan, Michael Trotter, Donnie Motley, Willis B. Thompson, Jr., and Chuck Bailey.
