Obituary of Melody Dawn Maynard

Melody Dawn “Mel” Maynard Of Man It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of Melody “Mel” Dawn Maynard, a beloved member of our community. Mel peacefully passed away on January 19, 2024, surrounded by family at the Hubbard Hospice House in Charleston. Her faith has ended in sight as she entered Heaven's gate. She was born on October 1, 1970, in Logan. Mel was the beloved daughter of Butch Maynard and the late Phyllis “Shorty” Goodman Maynard. In addition to her beloved mother, Mel was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Robert Ray and Juanita Vernatter Goodman; Paternal grandparents, Ozie and Ruby Justice Hoosier; and Aunt Helen “Sparky” Vernatter Dillon, Aunt Betty Sorrell; and Uncle Earnest Vernatter. Mel was a 1988 graduate of Man High School where she was a member of the ROTC and played in the Miss Softball of America league. She was a member of the Big Spring Missionary Baptist Church where she was an active and valued member of the ladies aid and youth ministry. Mel was the biggest fan of Alabama Football, where she would post on Facebook, “Roll, Tide Roll”. She had served as an election clerk for the town of Man for well over thirty years. A friendly person, Mel never met a stranger and loved by many. She will be deeply missed by those who loved her. Those left to cherish her memory are, her loving father Butch Maynard of Indianapolis, IN; a sister, MeShele “Mickie” Thrower of Rogers, AR; Nephew, Adan Garza of Denver, CO; her beloved cousins who helped in her daily life, Diana Caserta, of Ridgeview, Sarah McCallister, of Griffithsville, Mark Dillon and Lynn Vanover, both of Amherstdale; Sheila Sorrell of Kistler; and her life long very best friend Michelle Stapelton of Man; along with a host of other relatives, church family and friends. The family would like to thank Kitty Wright and Violet Cline for the friendship, care, and compassion they extended to Mel. Visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 25, 2024, at the Big Spring Missionary Baptist Church, at Mallory. A Celebration of Mel’s Life will begin at 1:00 p.m. Thursday at the Big Spring Missionary Baptist Church at Mallory with Rev. Perry Brown officiating. In honor of Mel’s wishes she will be cremated following the service.
