Ozie Edward Burgess, 85, of Neibert, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, October 25, 2023, leaving from Logan Regional Medical Center, after a long illness. He was born on January 10, 1938, at Accoville, the son of the late James and Polly Ruth Ann (Toler) Burgess. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one step-son, Henry Dell Glandon; three sisters, Patty Ferguson, Nora Burgess, Lois Burgess; and three brothers, Roger Burgess, William Burgess, and Eugene Burgess. Ozie was an underground coal miner for 40 years who worked at several area mining companies. He was a member of the UMWA District 17. Ozie was a member of Monclo Freewill Baptist Church at Sharples for nearly 45 years. Before his illness, he loved going to church and witnessing for the Lord everywhere he went. When he was able, he enjoyed gardening and produced abundant crops of vegetables and flowers. Ozie also enjoyed sharing the bounty he grew with his family, neighbors, and friends. Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of 27 years, Marie Burgess of Neibert; two sons, Edward Burgess and his wife Norma Jean of OH and William Burgess of Sharples; one step-daughter, Danita Hutchins and her husband Timothy of St. Albans; one step-son, Keenan Glandon and his wife Chrystal of Garner, NC; grandchildren, Shirley and her husband Travis Kirby, Junior Burgess, Nicholas Burgess, Haley Ralch, Kayla and her husband Travis Erwin, Scott Hutchins, Keenan Chad Glandon, Austin Glandon, and Alyssa Glandon; great-grandchildren, Anthoney Erwin, Abby Erwin, Laelynn Erwin, Jasper Kirby, and Elyanna Kirby; two sisters, Gay Booth of Jeffrey and Phyllis Tipton and her husband Greg of Blair; three brothers, Larry Burgess and his wife Patty of Six Mile, Russell Burgess and his wife Janet of Blair, and Millard Burgess and his wife Kathy of Charleston; and many nieces and nephews along with a host of other relatives, church family, and friends. Visitation will be held from 6-9 p.m. Sunday, October 29, 2023, at the Lyburn Freewill Baptist Church at Lyburn. A Celebration of Life service will begin at 1:00 p.m. Monday at the Lyburn Freewill Baptist Church with Rev. Joe Lane and Rev. Jackie Grimmett officiating.
