I grew up with this kid on the baseball diamond, even though he was a superstar in all 3 major sports. We shared 2 state championships together. One was in Babe Ruth baseball in 1969. He was our left fielder while I was the shortstop on that Logan championship team. We beat a Williamson team and St. Albans in the regionals then beat Weirton and Barboursville in the State Tourney. We went on to the East Central Regional beating teams from Maryland, Delaware and New Jersey before falling in the semifinals to a team from Pennsylvania. The other state Championship was with Logan American Legion Post 19 in 1971. We beat Mullens, Welch and Huntington in the regionals then beat a team from Wheeling in the State Championship. We went on to the Mid Atlantic regional tourney beating teams from Maryland, Delaware and New Jersey before falling to a New Jersey team in the finals, one game away from the American Legion World Series in Tucson, Arizona. Rick played a huge part of our success on both Championship teams. I will miss him.
